Breast Reduction / Reduction Mammaplasty
Breast reduction surgery includes partial removal and reshaping of the glandular tissue and tightening of the skin, raising the nipple and reducing the size of the areola.
If the breast exceeds a certain size and the symptoms cannot be relieved permanently by physiotherapeutic measures, it is possible that the health insurance company will cover the costs of the breast reduction in normal-weight patients.

If the breast is very large, known as breast hypertrophy or macromastia, there can be considerable symptoms. There are complaints about neck and back pain, cutting off the bra straps, inflammation in the underbust crease or pain in the breast itself. This is especially true during physical activity and sport. In addition, it is usually difficult for these women to find well-fitted, sufficiently supportive bras or well-fitting clothing.
The weight of the breast leads to an increasing loss of skin elasticity. Stretch marks develop. The breast and nipple droop more and moreover the years. This is increasingly perceived by the women concerned as very annoying aesthetically. If there are even more pregnancies, the breast becomes completely out of shape. Sometimes there can also be an asymmetry, i.e. one breast can be significantly larger or completely different in shape than the other.
Affected young women often suffer very psychologically from the large breasts. In public they are z. Sometimes stared at and often addressed undesirably.

Treatment process
During the consultation / before the operation
As a first step, we ask you to explain to us what exactly is bothering you about your breast and what you would like to have corrected. Perhaps you also have an idea of a beautiful breast that you would want that could suit you. Of course, your personal medical history and your family predisposition to breast diseases will also be discussed.
After an initial examination of the breast, we will work with you to find the optimal solution to come as close as possible to your ideal image of a beautiful breast. Advantages and disadvantages of the various breast reduction options are discussed as well as the risks and complications, of course.
You will also be informed in detail about the technical details of the operation as well as the organizational details and formalities. A second consultation usually takes place in order to discuss the planned measures again and to answer any further questions.
The evening before, the anaesthetist will contact you by phone to discuss the anaesthesia process with you and answer any questions you may have.
What happens on the day of the operation?
Unless the anaesthetist instructs you differently, you should usually be sober by midnight. In the morning you will be welcomed by our team in the Center Clinic. The anaesthetist will have another informative conversation with you. You will also have another conversation with the surgeon to clarify any final questions and to plan the operation with drawings. Depending on the size of the breast reduction, the procedure takes about 2.5 hours. You will then be looked after in the wake-up station by our qualified nurse.
Breast operations can usually be carried out in day clinic conditions without any problems. If you wish, we can of course also offer you an overnight stay in the Center Clinic under the supervision of a qualified nurse.
All necessary aids and medication will be made available to you.
Is Breast Reduction Painful?
Depending on the surgical technique required, slight to moderate pain can occur. But you will be provided with all the painkillers you need. In addition, a long-lasting local anaesthetic is always injected into the wound at the end of the procedure in order to suppress the first phase of pain.
What happens in the days after the breast reduction surgery?
You will be provided with all the aids and medication you need: you don't have to worry about anything! As a rule, you should wear a special medical bra for 6 weeks after the treatment. You will also receive the mobile numbers of the surgeon and the anaesthetist so that you can seek advice at any time if you are unsure.
In order to keep swelling and bleeding to a minimum, sensible physical rest for the first 2-3 days after a breast reduction is absolutely necessary. You can and should be active again immediately - within a reasonable framework. Bed rest is not necessary.
Depending on the type of procedure, the shoulder area must be spared for several days to weeks.
Intense physical activity should be avoided for 4–8 weeks.
When will I be socially acceptable again after a breast reduction?
Usually immediately. However, you must, of course, expect restricted movement in the shoulder area for several days to weeks.
